About this book

'I want to tell you that you are complete as you are. You are enough. Not half of one thing and half of another.' These words from author Emma Slade Edmondson, co-host of the Mixed Up podcast, sum up the positive tone of this book. Each chapter deals with a different theme, such as how language use has evolved, and how to answer (or not!) the question, 'Where are you from?' Scattered throughout are letters to the reader from mixed-race people, including authors and actors, which add a personal touch and chime with the warm information from Emma Slade Edmondson herself. There are also suggested exercises if the reader feels that they'd benefit from exploring certain topics further. Each chapter is divided into short sections of information, and is designed to include lots of small illustrations too, making this feel super-appealing.

Identity is something that all children and young people grapple with at some point, no matter their heritage. This could be a heavy topic, but it's dealt with in an age-appropriate, engaging way. This is a sensible, useful guide to being 'mixed-race' - a term that is itself debated within the pages - and would be thought-provoking to all children (and adults). A must-have for school libraries.
