About this book
Atalanta Scrimshaw is a lovely mermaid living under the sea around the delightful Blue Lagoon, in Sleepy Cove, very near Waldo Pond (a map is provided in the book obviously). Her hobby is walking (rather as a human’s hobby would be swimming) and conservation, she spends a lot of time picking up and recycling plastic left by humans into REGGO building blocks. Her best friend is Creech, short for the Creature of the Blue Lagoon, who studies humans. All is calm. But then Creech goes missing and Atalanta leads the rescue mission. It’s surely connected to a very unpleasant human Nylon Dusk (yes, the puns keep coming!) who wants to make profit out of the sea.
This is a very highly illustrated chapter book with incredibly beautiful illustrations on every page. It’s a charming adventure with a gentle conservation message. For anyone obsessed with mermaids it’s a must. Any adults reading will giggle at the puns and cultural references and can explain to child readers if they like, but not knowing won’t spoil the story at all! This is the second book in Chris Riddell’s Mermaid series but can easily be read first.
