About this book

Vixie the fox cub and her siblings live in a cosy den with their loving parents. Vixie's dad has a particular way of cheering her up - they share a special bond. So when he says he has to go away for a while, Vixie is upset. But her dad explains that they can feel connected even when they're apart. And Vixie learns to carry on - and even have fun - until he returns.

Many young children suffer separation anxiety at various points in their lives, and this gentle story suggests ways of managing those feelings. Vixie learns that even if it hurts to think about her father while he's not there, there is comfort in knowing that he'd return. The strong rhythm of the rhyming text makes it a pleasure to read aloud, and it contains many references to the father-child connection and love. This could be a comforting read that might start a conversation about love still existing even if the person isn't there.

About the author

John Dougherty was the sort of boy who always had his nose in a book, and he grew into the sort of adult who always has his nose in a book, which is probably why he decided to become a writer. Born and raised in Larne, Northern Ireland, John now lives in Stroud in Gloucestershire with his wife, two children, a few chickens and several bees. He’s a keen singer who has performed solo, with a band, and as a member of three award-winning a cappella groups. He also enjoys running, and has completed the London Marathon three times. A former teacher, John now loves to visit schools to talk about his work. His books have been shortlisted for a number of prestigious awards but, more importantly, they make children giggle.

About the illustrator
