Frank Is a Butterfly
by Alex Latimer
Interest age: 4 to 7
Published by Oxford University Press, 2025
About this book
Frank is a dull-brown, medium-sized caterpillar, devoid of any special markings or jazzy features. And that’s absolutely fine with him.
He has no desire for anything else in his life apart from his lovely leaf in the bright sunshine, his view of the river, and his friends.
When all the butterflies go into hibernation in their chrysalises, they’re all super excited about how they’re going to look. Who will have the most beautiful colours, spots, zigzags and triangles?
Yet when they do hatch, all of the butterflies are disappointed that they aren’t somehow more – except Frank.
Frank, who has hatched into a large, completely brown butterfly, is absolutely beside himself with joy, because now he can fly to the river he has previously only been able to look at. And he can now fly around, exploring the world for flowers.
When he tries to encourage the other butterflies to come and explore with him, they refuse, ashamed of their wings, and so Frank finds other friends that aren’t as obsessed with their appearance and are as fascinated by the world around them as he is.
An adorable book about looking beyond the physical and being grateful for what we have, Frank Is a Butterfly is a lovely picture book that blends gentle humour, butterfly facts, and a lovable hero into a delightful read.
