About this book
Emba Oak is no ordinary girl. Instead of being born, she was hatched from an egg, and her limbs are scaled like a dragon’s hide. She lives an odd yet peaceful life in a cave with her guardian Fred (Winnifred the Wise) and Odolf Bravebuckle, an orphaned boy who dreams of becoming a mighty hero.
Emba’s life is changed forever when a dragon appears that only she can see. She then discovers that a power-hungry villain, Necromalcolm, is searching for her and plotting to use her dragon blood for his nefarious designs.
When Fred is captured by Necromalcolm, Emba and Odolf embark on a perilous quest armed only with a prophecy, a stick, a stone, a belt buckle and a protective bag of toenail clippings to rescue her. Along the way, Emba struggles to control her emerging dragon powers and Odolf grapples with his courage.
This is a brilliantly entertaining fantasy adventure that unfolds at a good pace. The short chapters are packed with action, humour and magic and readers will be gripped from the outset. Emba and Odolf are engaging underdog heroes and this first in a series sets up their future adventures nicely.
