About this book
Damien Ike is turning 15 and he’s desperate for his Mage powers to kick in. Most people get their powers when they’re 13, so it’s embarrassing that he’s still at elementary school with all the other powerless kids.
It’s even more humiliating because his father is the Head of the High Commission of Magic, and Damien is expected to become his heir. It’s a lot to live up to; his father is tracking down rebels who are threatening the status quo and suggesting that Nullborns – those born without the potential to become Mages – shouldn’t be killed.
So when he finds a forbidden spell and a ring with powers, Damien takes matters into his own hands. Soon, he’s at the Lumen Academy, trying to hide the fact that he’s faking it. But when he uncovers a secret his mother has kept from everyone, it changes everything. Damien has some tough choices to make...
This is a compelling dystopian fantasy that examines prejudice, power, and questioning the establishment. There are deeply unsavoury elements about the existing society – namely, the killing at birth of the Nullborns – and there is some rebel violence shown on the page, so this isn’t for a sensitive reader.
