Colours with a Ladybird
by Dawn Sirett, illustrated by Rachael Parfitt Hunt
Interest age: 4 to 5
Published by DK, 2018
About this book
Little Ladybird has shiny red boots. Caterpillar offers Ladybird an orange boot, and Fluffy Chick a yellow one, while Frog gives a green one. Dragonfly offers a blue boot and Butterfly a purple one. Eventually, after meeting the different animals, Little Ladybird is wearing boots of many different colours!
There is a shiny coloured trail along each page from animal to boot, and the text encourages the child to follow the trail. Tracing the lines with their finger will help develop their fine motor skills, plus it offers the childa way to interact with the book. With this action, they are almost helping give the boot to Ladybird.
The simple rhyming text aids language development and is pleasing to read aloud. The child might be able to anticipate the rhyme after several reads. The colours themselves are bright, with various shades on each spread, and the illustrations contain many things to spot or count. Following Little Ladybird’s walk through nature is a delightful way to learn colours and to enjoy sharing a story.
