About this book
At the back of a garden - among tools, broken furniture, and old paint pots - you’ll find a very unlikely guest.
Two children discover a lost little dinosaur at the park and invite him over to stay in the shed. Even though it’s a tight squeeze, the pair do their best to look after their dino pal: they make him a cosy bed and give him plenty of tickles and cuddles.
From romping in the woods to splashing in the sea, the new friends love spending time together. But one day, the children notice that the things the dinosaur adored doing before, he no longer enjoys. Once smiley and mischievous, he is now grumpy and tearful.
Realising that their prehistoric friend is missing his mum, the children have a difficult decision to make. Will they do the right thing and help the lost dino get back home?
Both funny and heartwarming, this delightful picture book introduces children to the experience of having to let go of something or someone they love.
The story beautifully captures the charming relationship between the children and the dinosaur, showing the value of kindness and caring for others in need. The concept of letting go is shown in an entirely positive way as the lost dinosaur is eventually reunited with his mum.
The bouncy rhyming text is paired with wonderfully expressive illustrations and clever colour considerations. The story starts with happy and bright oranges, reds, and greens, but then the colour palette changes to gloomy greys and dark blues when the dinosaur’s mood changes. The final pages then return to the original vibrant, joyous tones when the children discover something else exciting in the shed.
