28 October 2026

In the Budget, Chancellor John Healey MP confirmed £15 million in funding for children’s reading.

We’re delighted to see the Budget’s investment in children’s books and reading and the huge difference it can make from the very start of a child’s life.

It’s a vital recognition that reading together from the earliest years has huge lifelong benefits, helping to shape how children think, feel and connect long after the book is closed.

We welcome the recognition of BookTrust’s work in today’s Budget speech by the Chancellor.

As the UK’s largest children’s reading charity, BookTrust has more than 100 years’ experience of helping families build a love of reading.

Through our Bookstart programme, we work alongside local government, health visitors, early educators, library professionals and other partners, building trusted relationships with families in communities across every postcode in England.

With our network of 30,000 professionals, we already support 400,000 low-income families each year, combining expertly selected books with resources and support to make reading together part of everyday life.

When we work together, we can help families enjoy books again and again, building language, belonging and connection through the joy of reading together.

We look forward to hearing the details of today’s announcement, and how to make the most of this opportunity, as it becomes clearer.
