The 7 Professors of the Far North

(1 reviews with an average rating of 4 out of 5)

Publisher: Faber Children's Books

In this futuristic story a deep-level underground railway links Western Europe and North Africa with a remote Arctic island in the Barents Sea. Three children set out to rescue their Professor Ampersand and his six companions from an evil organisation that is determined to produce a genetically and cosmetically altered race.

Despite its resemblance to a twenty-first century Famous Five adventure, serious issues are discussed within this extravagant tale. Apart from the obvious concerns about genetic engineering, the underlying issue concerns identity, all three children, together with the two they rescue, being actual, elective or emotional orphans. This is a far-fetched but  thought-provoking read.
