Max the Brave

Max the kitten is Brave - which is why he doesn't like being dressed up in ribbons. He sets out to find a mouse to chase, but he doesn't know what one looks like, and he doesn't know all the other creatures cats like to chase either! This means that as he meets each one - birds, goldfish, flies - and mice, they point him in the direction of something else. Finally Max finds a monster…

Vere's very simple cartoon kitten is black with large yellow eyes, and the background to each spread is a single colour, visually drawing our eyes to Max himself, especially  when the all-black interior of the monster just shows Max's frightened eyes!
