In The Beginning: Best Loved Bible Stories

Publisher: Walker Books

In the beginning, God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form, and void. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

The text of the Biblical Old Testament may be familiar to some of us, and we might know the Christian creation myth and the stories of Cain and Abel, Samson and Moses. But what we might not have come across before are these stories illustrated by Jan Pienkowski, the master of high colour, graphic art for children.

In this collection of Old Testament stories, Pienkowski uses the original text but illustrates the stories with his inimitable psychedelic punk art style, highlighting the drama and magic of these old tales. You might not have seen the story of Moses titled in bubble writing, or depicting Moses himself in fiery pinks, turquoises and oranges against a black sky, but any fan of Pienkowski’s art, or child looking for a more unusual take on the Bible, will adore this anarchic book.
