Helping Hercules

Horrid Henry author Francesca Simon has taken seven Greek myths and given them a twist: introducing an extra character in the shape of a small, and somewhat stroppy, girl named Susan.

When she is sent to her room for refusing to clean out the cat’s litter tray, Susan begins to play with her collection of ancient coins, including one from ancient Greece which has magical properties. Soon she is helping Hercules with a rather larger chore: cleaning out the Augean stables.

The book takes a fresh look at each of the myths (including such favourites as Orpheus in the Underworld and King Midas), through which not only Susan, but also the reader, learns a little classical history, as well as something about family life.
