Annual Fellowship

The Unwin Trust's UK-Australia Fellowship was originally funded for four years for two people in Australia to visit the UK and two people from the UK to visit Australia, to carry out projects of mutual benefit to the book industry of each country. It was announced in 2007 that the fund will be extended for another four years.

The first of the Fellows, Lorien Kaye, visited the UK from Australia in 2003.

The second Fellow, Rebeka Cohen, investigated trends in book and cover design at art and museum publishers in Australia and her report Art and Museum Publishing in Australia: trends in book and cover design is now available as a PDF download:

Annabel Fleay, Children's Product Manager at Pan Macmillan Australia, was awarded the 2005 Unwin Trust UK-Australia Fellowship.

Annabel's winning proposal was entitled Trends in the Book Industry: An analysis of the shift toward a bestseller environment in the children's book industry.

The fourth Fellow, Hannah Westland, is a literary agent with Rogers, Coleridge & White in London. She spent three months in Australia, from October 2006 to January 2007, investigating the benefits to Australian and non-Australian authors of selling Australian rights separately to Australian publishers, and measuring this against the relative benefits of the traditional approach of selling British Commonwealth rights, including Australian rights, to UK publishers.

Download her report, Looking After the Author's Best Interests: an investigation into the relative benefits of the various publishing approaches available to authors within the Australian market.
