Pyjamarama in your community: frequently asked questions

Each June, BookTrust celebrates the bedtime story and gives away over 450,000 picture books to children at fun Pyjamarama events up and down the country.

We want to get a brilliant bedtime (or anytime) story to as many young children as possible, and we work with local authorities and other partners - from libraries and children’s centres to food banks - to make that happen.

If you have a specific question about Pyjamarama in your community, or just want to find out a bit more, take a look at our FAQs below.

Everything you need to know about Pyjamarama in your community

  • What is Pyjamarama?

BookTrust’s Pyjamarama campaign aims to put the bedtime story centre stage. We are running a fundraising participation campaign all over England and Northern Ireland and we are also working with partners in England, Wales and Northern Ireland to give out over 450,000 free picture books to under 5s via community settings, including libraries, children’s centres, refuges and foodbanks.

So put on your favourite PJs and join us by throwing pyjama events and activities full of storytime fun for families in your area. We’d love you to get involved and help us get more families reading, while promoting your own local services and having a great time!

We are not expecting our delivery partners to fundraise for us but if you do want to get involved, you can find out more here.

  • When is Pyjamarama?

We will be celebrating Pyjamarama and the bedtime story all week from Monday 1 June until Sunday 7 June 2020.

  • Has Pyjamarama replaced National Bookstart Week?

Pyjamarama has replaced National Bookstart Week but we will continue to deliver books and resources in the same way and hold events up and down the county as we did with National Bookstart Week. We will be promoting the campaign and the bedtime story across the country via press and social media.

  • I am a librarian or children’s centre practitioner, where can I download resources and ideas to engage families?

You will be able to download resources from this website in the spring, including promotional posters, activity sheets and rhyme sheets. We’ll also be sharing lots of top tips and ideas for your events over the next few months and you can follow us on Twitter and Facebook for campaign updates.

  • Does everyone have to wear their pyjamas to get involved?

We’d love to see lots of you getting involved in the Pyjamarama fun, but you don’t need to wear pyjamas to take part. If you don’t want to wear pyjamas, you could suggest children and their families bring their dressing gowns, blankets, favourite cuddly toys or just wear something comfy to the event. You can make the events work for your setting and community. All that matters is that families are having fun with stories and that children go home with their free bedtime book.

  • Can I promote what I am doing, if so how?

Yes, you can. To help, we've put together a Social Media and Press Toolkit, which you can download here. It's full of advice on how to promote your event as well as a press release template and social media assets.

  • What if I want to fundraise, too?

If you would like to fundraise, or know someone else who might like to, you can sign up for a fundraising kit here.

  • What resources are available for Pyjamarama?

Book-gifting partners will be sent books and activity sheets for children attending their events. Libraries will also receive a support pack with a large edition of the book and promotional posters. In the spring, there will also be posters and other resources available to download and print from this website.

  • When will I get my Pyjamarama resources?

If you are one of our book-gifting partners, you will receive your allocation of Pyjamarama resources between April and May. If you have not received communication of your allocation, please contact

  • Are the resources available in Welsh?

Yes, Welsh-English bilingual books, posters and activity sheets will be available for our book-gifting partners in Wales and will be delivered in May. Welsh-English bilingual posters and activity sheets will be available to download from this website in the spring.

If you are in Wales and have a query about Pyjamarama, please contact

  • How do I get extra resources if I need them?

If you need extra copies of posters and activity sheets, you can download them from this website in the spring.

  • Are resources the same as they were for National Bookstart Week?

The Pyjamarama resources are brand-new materials themed around the bedtime story, however they are similar in concept and specification to resources you have previously received for National Bookstart Week.
