About the programme

Bookstart Corner enables you to support families that are either entitled to the free 2-year-old early education grant or need additional help to develop a love of stories, books and rhymes. Aimed at families with children aged 12-30 months, it allows settings to offer intensive support for parents and carers so that they can read with their children with confidence.

The programme has been designed to build on the work already done by settings that work with children, offering additional support with:

  • Child development – supporting communication, emotional, physical and social development, so that children start school confident and able to learn
  • Parents and carers' aspirations and skills – helping parents and carers maximise their skills and give their children the best possible start

Free resources for families and practitioners

Bookstart Corner resources are allocated to centres or settings by local authorities via Bookstart Coordinators. As part of your allocation you will receive:

  • Resources to support home visits or sessions with 25, 50 or 100 families which have children aged 12-30 months. The packs contain two picture books and guidance materials, and can be given to families to take home.
  • A box of resources to help you create a fun Bookstart Corner space within your setting, to provide access to books and promote reading. The four posters, ten book titles and The Rhyme Challenge pack will help you have fun sharing books, stories and rhymes with families.

Help and guidance

If you are delivering Bookstart Corner in 2019-20, you should have been sent a direct link to the Bookstart Corner section of the website, which contains a wealth of information, session ideas and downloadable resources to help you deliver the programme to your families. There is also an online training quiz for you and your colleagues to take.

If you haven't received a link, or are unsure of your allocation, please contact your Bookstart Coordinator in the first instance, or email bookstartcorner@booktrust.org.uk and we'll be happy to help.

If you would like to get involved in Bookstart Corner in the future, and you aren't already receiving emails from us, please contact bookstartcorner@booktrust.org.uk and we'll make sure you're on the mailing list.
