Fifteen years after her first, this is another unmistakably classic Charlie and Lola book. One Thing employs Child's trademark art in a celebration of the fun small children can have with numbers. Having indulged her enthusiasm for literacy many times, she now explores the shapes of numbers, the exciting things you can do with them, and the wonderful words that describe them, especially made-up ones like a squillion or twenty-seventeen.
Child's illustrations employ her customary range of collage, paint and line images, with varied papers for backgrounds and a seemingly infinite variety of fonts and sizes to emphasize the narrative. A typically child-like situation is the root of the story, and, as ever, Charlie's patience with Lola is exasperated and loving!
