Letterbox Club in Wales

Each year we send around 900 Letterbox parcels to children in Wales who are looked-after. The parcels contain books, games and stationery specially selected to inspire a love of reading and engagement with numeracy.
The parcels encourage children to enjoy learning outside of school and are theirs to keep at home to use independently or with their carers. Parcels are available for children and young people aged 3 ‑13, and each child enrolled receives six parcels through the post, one each month, usually from October to March.
Each parcel is packed with books, math games, stationery and letters from authors! In Wales we include Welsh language, bilingual or Welsh interest books in our Letterbox Purple parcel for children aged 3–5, as well as books suitable for Welsh learners or Welsh speakers in our Letterbox Red and Letterbox Blue parcels.
The Welsh Government Education Directorate provides funding for around 800 children to participate in the Letterbox Club each year. Education Consortia, Local Authorities and schools can also fund additional places for more children to enjoy the programme.

Each parcel contains high quality resources that our young learners love. I have used the Letterbox Club Parcels as a way of stimulating positive communication between carers and children as they have the opportunity to sit and read with each other. The parcels provide much more than words in a book – they are gifts from people that care.
