Alan MacDonald's brand new book Ask Oscar is a hilarious story of a dog like no other... which got us thinking about our favourite pooches in children's books.

But we thought it might be a better idea to ask Alan himself about the classic canines that he loves, so read on to find out which ones he picked...

1. Woof! by Allan Ahlberg (Puffin)

One of my favourite children's books with an opening line that's impossible to resist. 'There was once a boy who turned into a dog...'

2. Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy by Lynley Dodd (Puffin)

A picture book my children never tired of reading, with a perfect rhyming story and a gang of dogs who meet their match.

3. Dogger by Shirley Hughes (Random House)

Shirley Hughes's story - about a much loved toy dog who goes missing - belongs on every bookshelf.

4. Odd Dog Out by Rob Biddulph (HarperCollins)

I love the imaginative, quirky illustrations and the clever tale about a dog who's worried that he doesn't fit in.

5. The Hundred and One Dalmatians by Dodie Smith (Egmont)

No list would be complete without this classic tale about stolen puppies and the race to rescue them. If you've seen the film, then read the original book that inspired it.
