What's the Difference?

40+ Pairs of the Seemingly Similar

Publisher: Chronicle Books

Ever wondered what makes a mandarin different from a clementine? A nectarine from a peach? A tornado from a cyclone? Then this is the book for you!

What's the Difference? tells us the distinction between a collection of pairs, divided into six categories: animals, food and drink, geography, fashion, the human body, and the city. It's a simple but glorious concept that is a lot of fun for both parents and children, and sure to prompt some good conversation.

The non-stop trivia, presented in clear infographic-style illustration, is fairly addictive, so it is easy to devour the book in one go. But young readers will probably enjoy dipping in and out to feed their curiosity and collect amusing titbits to show off to their friends: "Did you know that a wasp eats insects?"

One or two of the choices are a bit obscure and perhaps down to cultural differences – the author-illustrator team are based in France, which may account for something like 'closet versus armoire'. Even there, however, you will discover something new and fascinating. Great fun!
