Why are there so few poetry books for primary-age readers? As Joseph Coelho's first collection shows, poetry is often far more accessible than novels, yet most publishers seem not to recognise its brief, pithy, sound-bite attraction. Coelho follows in a noble tradition headed by Agard, Ahlberg, McGough and Rosen, who turn everyday life into memorable poetic miniatures.
This collection contains several metaliterary poems, which teach readers about words and how to use them, but the real gems deal with family, friends, animals and school life. Particularly gripping are a wonderful lullaby, memories of inspirational - and awful - teachers, family members, particularly the riches grandparents' memories offer, and everyday events which we have all experienced. John O'Leary's illustrations complement the poems perfectly.
