We Went to Find a Woolly Mammoth
Publisher: Hodder Children’s Books
Join a group of children as they travel to the Ice Age to find a woolly mammoth. They have a checklist of identifying features: tusks, thick shaggy hair, a trunk – and being enormous! They discover many other gigantic Ice Age animals, such as a sabre tooth cat, a giant elephant bird, a giant sloth, and even a giant woolly rhino! But will they ever find a woolly mammoth?
This delightful picture book combines facts and fiction in a very appealing way. The text invites the reader to be part of the hunt, asking questions and using dramatic language like, ‘Everybody hide!’ The gorgeous illustrations depict three very cute children, with an adult supervisor, and some fascinating animals. There are extra details about each huge animal on the page when they’re revealed, and a spread at the end compares our contemporary equivalents with their Ice Age ancestors.
This would be fun to share with young children, as they can get involved by predicting whether the next animal is a mammoth or not. A charming and surprisingly informative picture book.
