To Market! To Market!

Publisher: Tara Books

Review

A small girl sets off with some money to visit the market, but gets so caught up in the excitement of all the different stalls that she finds that she arrives home again without having spent anything!

Ravishankar's modern nursery rhyme takes us through an Indian market, to experience the myriad sights and sounds to be found there. The layout of the pages is oriented so that readers must open the book and turn it through ninety degrees to read text and images, which isn't the easiest layout for small hands. Nevertheless Scanziani's colourful, action-filled pictures and the innovative use of type and text to reflect the action draws us into the rhyme, and immerses us in the girl's experience.
