The Fire Chronicle

Publisher: Doubleday

The second in John Stephens's Books of Beginning fantasy series continues the story of Kate, Michael and Emma, siblings separated from their parents ten years before, and now immured in the delightfully named Edgar Allan Poe Home for Hopeless and Incorrigible Orphans. Supported by Gabriel and Dr Pym, they battle a variety of evil creatures in thrall to the terrible Dire Magnus, but also encounter more ambiguous characters on their adventures.

There are echoes of C S Lewis’s Narnia series in this fast-moving, direct adventure story - albeit with a distinctly contemporary, 21st century spin. With plenty of humour and strong characterisation, Stephens is sure to engage pre-teen readers as he continues to unfold the stories of his young heroes.
