In the closing years of the 19th century Samuel Godwin, a promising young artist, is employed by Ernest Farrrow to tutor his two teenage daughters at the beautiful Fourwinds house.

Samuel immediately falls in love with both the house and Marianne, Mr Farrow's irrepressible and wilful, younger daughter. Soon Samuel, along with the girls' devoted governess, Charlotte, discovers secrets of a horrifying nature lie behind the beautiful façade of the house and the Farrows' seemingly happy family life.

This novel draws heavily on the work of the Brontë sisters, with its emphasis on landscape and architecture, air of brooding mystery, and focus on the subordination of women in a male-dominated society. Altogether a compelling read.
