The fifth Eva book by Curtin finds our heroine continuing her progress from spoilt child to miracle worker. When she and her friend Ella go to visit Ella's granny, who is now in a care home, they discover that it is being run like a prison, and together with Gigi, the feisty granny, they work to overturn the regime. At school they are intrigued by a new girl whose friendly attitude suddenly changes when they invite her to join them after school. They discover the psychological damage which a lack of compassion can cause in others.

As a character Curtin's Eva introduces young readers to members of society who are often badly treated, and encourages them to think about others.
