Publisher: Piccadilly Press

Milly Pond feels like she’s living in her twin sister’s shadow. Lily is outspoken, flirtatious and daring in ways that Milly won’t ever be. For her whole life Milly has felt like an afterthought; after all she wasn’t even expected, appearing as a surprise buy one get one free after Lily’s birth and hastily named after a muddy puddle. Now despite, or because of, a mysterious Incident that she refuses to talk about Milly has decided to step out on her own for the first time. She’s changing her school, her name, and her future. Told through an alternating series of journal entries Milly recounts her version of life before The Incident and how life has been since.

Perhaps more mature a story than the cover suggests, this intriguing little novel is a mystery that sneaks up on what would otherwise be Jacqueline Wilson family drama territory. Fourteen -year-old Milly is an endearing and heartbreakingly honest narrator, whose story quickly earns the readers trust and interest. A small but perfectly formed drama with a surprise up its sleeve for readers looking to move into more sophisticated storytelling.
