Many Moons

Publisher: Walter Foster Jr

A boy imagines the crescent moon is a bow for his arrow and inspired by a half moon, a man eats half a wheel of cheese. This black-and-white picture book presents a series of vignettes of a bright yellow, shiny and changeable moon interacting with different people and animals. Lastly, at the end of the book, there's a clear and useful guide to the phases of the moon - what they're called and why they occur.

This is an unusual topic for a picture book, and while there's no real story that follows through, the book itself is an attractive homage to Luna and an insight into the way that the moon maintains a presence in our lives, even when it appears to be absent. Toddlers and pre-schoolers will like following the changing shape of the moon through the book, and older ones will be interested in the science-y bit at the end.
