This stunning non-fiction picture book is a fabulous exploration of the insect world for young children. As well as looking at familiar creatures, such as bees, ladybirds and ants, it also features other more unusual specimens, including fireflies, stick insects and some spectacular mantises.
Each botanical-style illustration is labelled with both the common and scientific name, and there is a useful contents page, glossary and index. We learn that insects have been around for 400 million years, they outnumber all other animal species and are essential to life on earth. Also included are some incredible facts, for instance the taurus scarab dung beetle can pull 1,141 times its own weight, equivalent to a person hauling six full double-decker buses!
This is not a comprehensive reference guide, but rather a beautifully-illustrated introduction to insects for young readers and would make an ideal gift for any budding entomologist. This edition includes an attractive A4 colour print of a selection of beetles, weevils and ladybirds.
