Nicholas' brother died because he was born too early but he is reincarnated as a tree at the bottom of the garden. Nicholas thought his grandfather was dead too but one day he turns up, rambling about a treasure map and priceless heirlooms.

In a bid to find the treasure, save his house (and his brother) and restore some order to a life he feels is falling apart, Nicholas must join forces with two of the many people who hate him to engineer a kidnapping and expeditions to some of the scariest places he knows.
