I Don't Want to Go to School

Publisher: Gecko Press

Gecko Press publish 'curiously good books' from around the world. Their list has some fantastic fiction, gorgeous gift books and their picture book list is both eccentric and excellent.

Stephanie Blake's fourth picture book featuring the mischievous little rabbit of 'Poo Bum' fame keeps the style standard high while confirming Simon's status as a classic character on the rise. According to his parents, he's starting school tomorrow. Simon says he's 'not going'. He can't sleep - he's scared. His mummy is sure he is brave enough to try it. His father thinks he will make friends and learn lots. Simon's first day of school is very busy - there is drumming and drawing, playing and crying, chocolate mousse and a little nap - and when it's time to go home, Simon is 'not going'!

This has slightly younger appeal than Mo Willem's hilarious Pigeon series but shares a sense of humour and bold comic illustrations. Bright colours and giant text make it a visual treat and Blake's wobbly drawings could inspire little ones to copy her style. The simple text doesn't have the unique charm of Stupid Baby or the shock-tactic delights of Poo Bum but parents might find it a useful tool to relieve any pre-school fears, and Simon is a brilliant character that deserves to reach a wide audience
