Handa's Surprise
Publisher: Walker Books
Handa fills her basket with seven delicious fruits - one for each of her friends. But as she walks, the basket balanced on her head, she is unaware of the crafty animals intent on stealing her fruits: a monkey grabs the banana, an ostrich the guava, a zebra the orange, an elephant the mango, a giraffe the pineapple, an antelope the avocado and a parrot the passionfruit.
Finally, a goat charges into a tangerine tree, filling Handa's basket with its fruit. When she reaches her friend Akeyo, Handa is astonished to find her basket full of tangerines, but Akeyo is delighted as tangerines are her favourite fruit!
Glorious images of an African village convey the sights, smells and colours of the landscape, its animals and its food in a story told as much through pictures as through words.

We love this story and read it every year. We use the story sack to act out the story. The children love pretending to be the animals and they enjoy tasting all the different fruits at snack time. We were very disappointed when the reporting inspector told us this was not suitable as a foundation stage story!!! Of course we disagreed.....

Love this book! Have read it a few times working in nurseries. The children love learning and talking about the animals, which is a great way to lead into the topic of animals. Talking about the various fruit is a great way to encourage children to try new foods too!

Loved this book! We re-enacted the story and ended up eating lots of fruit! The story is ideal for under 5's and invites questions about fruit, Africa and different animals. My DS adored the story and I'm looking forward to sharing it with my newborn x
