Grumpycorn

Publisher: Scholastic Children’s Books

Unicorn is confident that he is about to write the most fabulous story in the world. He settles down in his special writing house with his fluffy pen, fancy notebook and a cup of moonberry tea, waiting for inspiration to strike. Alas, he has no idea where to start.

One by one, his friends swim by and ask if they can be in the story. Narwhal pictures himself as a brave knight, Mermaid imagines battling with fearsome monsters, while Jellyfish fancies herself as a space explorer. Mermaid and Narwhal even bake Unicorn some inspirational cookies, but nothing seems to cure his writer’s block.

Unicorn grumpily sends the sea creatures away, claiming they are interrupting his creative thought process. Luckily, despite his rude behaviour, his kindly friends don’t give up on him, and work together to help him out.

This entertaining picture book about friendship, collaboration and determination is a delight to share with young children. Vibrant illustrations, which are full of humorous detail, burst from every page to bring the funny, warm-hearted tale to life.
