Freedman and Julian reveal the problems which arise when parents don't realise the difference between baby dragons and lizards in a pet shop!
At first everything goes well, but as Sparky grows, and his fire-breathing gets more powerful, George is afraid that his parents will insist that he must go. However, dragons have their uses when the car breaks down, and as Sparky learns to be careful, they all welcome him to the family.
A reassuring book for its messages of unusual friendships, tolerance and understanding, the lively and colourful illustrations echoing this theme, the spreads sometimes split into several scenes. They often challenge gender expectations, as it is Mum who works and services the car, and Dad who housekeeps.
