Five Little Chicks

Publisher: Templar Books

Five cute little chicks go out into the beautiful countryside one day with Mamma Hen, finding lots of other animals to make friends with and all manner of exciting places to hide. But, one by one, they get too caught up in the world, and, eventually, all five chicks have left Mamma Hen. Oh no!

Fortunately, the offer of cake brings everyone back, and they’ve brought a lovely present for their very patient mum.

With plenty of interesting and varied size flaps to lift, children following the story can hunt for the chicks under flowers, plant pots and even a fox’s bushy tail, and in doing so find other things too: a family of mice, a frog on a lily pad, two jumping fish. As well as seeing and naming other animals and countryside elements, Five Little Chicks encourages counting up and down from five and up to ten at the end of the book. The repetition of the rhyme and Mamma Hen calling all her chicks back to her also means that children can start to learn the words for themselves and predict what’s going to happen next, so there’s a lot of useful elements here for preschoolers.
