Dot and Anton live in Germany in the 1930s. Dot Pogge and her family are rich and eccentric, while her friend Anton is poor and has to look after his sick mother.
These two friends are both to be found outdoors each evening, selling shoelaces and matches on the streets of Berlin. Anton does this because he needs to make money, but Dot does it to earn money for her governess.
