After being abandoned at a London theatre when she was an infant, Cat Royal has always believed that she has no family, so is stunned when her guardian shows her a letter from a woman claiming to be a relative from Scotland. Knowing she must find out the truth, she travels to the Scottish town of Lanark, where she gains employment in the cotton mill in an attempt to get to know her alleged family before revealing her identity.
