Bikes for Sale

Publisher: Chronicle Books

Two cheery animals ride their bikes in different parts of the same park, each independently going about their business. Maurice’s customised yellow bicycle is a mobile lemonade stall and he loves selling squeezy drops of sunshine to satisfied customers.

Lotta rides her red bike with a large basket on the back, to the wooded area of the park, where she collects sticks of all shapes and sizes. When she shares her finds with others, the humble sticks are transformed into exciting objects, such as stilts, a limbo pole and a dog’s favourite toy. Everyone is happy when Maurice and Lotta are around.

However, disaster strikes when Lotta’s cycle skids on some discarded lemon peel and a stick gets jammed in the spokes of Maurice’s wheel. The downcast creatures are forced to abandon their wheels and return home on foot with heavy hearts. They both feel glum without their bicycles, until a visit to Sid’s Bike Shop changes everything.

This quirky tale, with distinctive, vibrant illustrations, is delightful. Amusing and uplifting, it explores the joy of friendship and demonstrates that sharing adventures can double the fun.
