Win this stunning 10th Anniversary edition of A Monster Calls

Patrick Ness' beautiful tale of grief and storytelling celebrates its tenth anniversary this year. Here's how you can get your hands on a copy of your own.

Stories are wild creatures, the monster said. When you let them loose, who knows what havoc they might wreak?

Thirteen-year-old Conor O'Malley wakes up at midnight to hear a shadowy voice calling to him from outside, where a towering yew tree overlooks an ancient church. When Connor goes to investigate, he encounters a horrifying monster of branches and leaves. The monster warns Connor that it will tell him three stories, after which Conor must tell the monster a story of his own - but if Connor's story is not true, the monster will eat him alive.

Patrick Ness' and Jim Kay's sensational children's book, based on an idea by Siobhan Dowd who sadly passed away before she could write it, won both the Carnegie and Greenaway medals following its publication ten years ago. The story of Connor - a young boy struggling to cope with his mother's terminal illness - and the tree-monster who uses the power of stories to get Connor to confront his fear, has been adapted into a film and a stage production and is still a powerful and beautiful fable today.
