Win this beautiful and heartfelt picture book about the Windrush experience

Soak in the colours and wonders of this wonderful picture book, which tells the story of the Windrush journey to children and helps us remember the struggles and achievements of a generation.

Granny Came Here on the Empire Windrush is the debut picture book by multi-award-winning author Patrice Lawrence, gorgeously illustrated by Camilla Sucre.

As the author discusses in an article for BookTrust, she is of Caribbean heritage but still exploring that side of her identity, even in adulthood. Although the passenger in Granny Came Here on the Empire Windrush is fictional, it is a typical story that sets this historic event in context – ideal for children who know little about what the journey of that ship and what happened to people afterwards, when they tried to build a new life for themselves in England.

It is also a book that celebrates the love and relationship between a grandchild and a grandparent.
