Travel back in time with two beautiful stories by Hilary McKay

Here's how you can win Hilary McKay's historical novels The Swallows' Flight and The Skylarks' War.

Get ready to be transported back to the two World Wars in Hilary McKay's beautifully written books, The Skylarks' War and The Swallows' Flight.

In The Skylarks' War, Clarry and her brother Peter live for their annual summer trips to Cornwall – a chance not only to escape their apathetic father, but to experience the joy of exploring nature with their exciting cousin Rupert.

But when the First World War begins and Rupert enlists in the army, their world is thrown upside down – will they ever see him again? And how will the shadow of conflict change their lives?

In the sequel The Swallows' Flight, we meet Kate and Ruby - two girls living in England during the years between the wars. When the bombs start falling, they're evacuated to Oxford to start a new life with kindly, no-nonsense Mrs Morgan and her wonderful garden. Meanwhile, in Germany, friends Hans and Erik are having great fun learning about planes and piloting at school - until they're both conscripted for National Service, and begin training for the Luftwaffe.

These beautiful, immersive books are expertly characterised, encompassing themes such as love, family, war, and loss with sensitivity and Hilary McKay's inimitable writing style - a perfect read for ages 10 and up.
