What to Read After... David Walliams 17/02/25
Welsh Giants, Ghosts and Goblins
Publisher: Firefly Press
Step into a magical world of goblins, hellhounds and ghosts in Claire Fayers’ excellent collection of retold traditional Welsh stories. Readers are introduced to legends, origin stories, ghostly tales and traditional Welsh folklore, all told against a backdrop of both contemporary and historical settings.
The journey of a teenage giant king, Idris, serves as the linking narrative feature between these standalone tales as he travels the length and breadth of Wales searching for exciting stories. Fayer has skilfully adapted these legends to suit a modern audience, blending elements of traditional storytelling with some feisty modern humour and contemporary references.
As well as being well-written and engaging, each story also features an explanatory introduction from the author. These features provide readers with some historical context for the Welsh folklore and demonstrate Fayers' clear passion for Welsh storytelling.
Each of these stories read well individually, allowing readers to dip in and out, but equally they form a cohesive narrative when read as a whole. Together, they form an excellent introduction to the rich history of storytelling in Wales.
