Why Do We Need Worms

Usborne Lift-the-flap First Questions and Answers

Publisher: Usborne

The worms in our soil help plants to grow in all sorts of special and interesting ways. Their tunnels bring air and water into the soil; their munching, pooing and wiggling help to mix the soil; AND their poo is full of nutrients! Result!

Not only that, but worms do other important things like helping the ground to avoid flooding – and the soil that worms have lived in is so much more nutrient-rich than other soil, which means that it’s valuable for farmers who would have to use fertilisers otherwise.

Looking at other important questions like what other creatures live in soil, how it’s made in the first place, and just why healthy soil is so vital, this informative board book is full of fascinating details about worms and their key role in natural ecosystems.

Featuring cardboard flaps and cute illustrations, this is a fun and interactive book, too. There’s quite a lot of information here, but each flap has a small and digestible amount of text that makes it accessible for primary school aged children.

By the time they can read the book independently, they may feel that the board book format and flaps are a little young, but the information and presentation is still generally attractive enough to be interesting.
