Why comics matter for young readers 02/12/24
Treacle Street: Marcel’s Parcels
A Lift-the-Flap book
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
Marcel the postman is a very busy elephant indeed. He has parcels for everyone in his trolley, including a bumper back of brand-new leg warmers for Prima Pavlova at her dance school, some eggs and flour for William at the Pie Shop and new wheels for Arabella’s race car at the Grease Monkey’s garage. But even at the end of Treacle Street, there’s one parcel left. Surprise! It’s a special treat for top-notch postman, Marcel and there’s a party to celebrate.
Kate Hindley’s illustrations are always an absolute joy to behold so it’s brilliant to see these beautifully produced flap books for younger children to enjoy. The text is brief with some lovely direct-to-reader lines: ‘Shall we pop inside and help him open his parcel?’
Children will be excited to get involved and peep inside the post. The characters are all very endearing and the gorgeous attention to detail makes this a real treat to look at.

Books about people who help us, for age 0-5
Discovering people in our community who help us (and their exciting vehicles!) is a key part of children's early years. As their worlds broaden to people and things outside the home, so they learn how some people have jobs that keep us safe and well. These are some of our favourite books to engage and excite young children on this topic.
