Toby and the Pixies: Worst King Ever
Publisher: David Fickling Books
Toby Cauldwell is an ordinary boy who lives in an ordinary town and attends an ordinary school, where his main aim is not to be noticed. However, his quiet life is turned upside down when he discovers an enchanted kingdom hidden in the undergrowth of his back garden. Toby is astounded when he is crowned King of the Pixies after inadvertently killing the former leader with a garden gnome.
Despite his protestations, Toby’s self-appointed loyal advisors – pixies Gatherwool, Mouldwarp and Toadflax – ‘help’ him perform his new royal duties and follow him everywhere, even to school. Desperate to conceal the pixies from his classmates, Toby invents increasingly elaborate stories to explain their riotous antics.
With quirky characters and a zany plot, this action-packed adventure is chaotic fun from start to end. The joy of the book lies in the graphic novel format, where the hilarious escapades are brought to life through vibrantly coloured cartoon strips, which add pace and humour to the tale.
Budding artists can learn to draw some of the key characters by following the step-by-step instructions at the end of the book.
