The Witchling's Wish
Publisher: Bloomsbury
In a bat-filled cave above the misty mountains lives a lonely Witchling who, one day, decides to magic herself up a friend. When her spell book asks for a one-eyed teddy, the Witchling realises she must find this mysterious and potentially terrifying ingredient out in the world. Heading off on her broomstick to a suburban address where, her crystal ball assures her, the one-eyed bear can be found, the Witchling flies into the bedroom of a little girl called Lily.
Although One-Eyed Ted is Lily’s oldest and most favourite toy, she generously offers the Witchling the last hair on his head for her friendship spell, leading the Witchling to realise that maybe she might have found a good-hearted friend without having to cast the spell at all.
Lu Fraser and Sarah Massini’s warm, magical and sweet story about friendship and kindness has a witchy theme, but more than anything it’s about the enchantment that occurs when we make a new friend. Massini’s gorgeous illustration fills the pages with a sense of nostalgia and bright sweeps of colour that will definitely leave readers spellbound.
