The Last Duchess

Publisher: Macmillan

Review

When Pattern is summoned to work for the grand Duchess of Elfinberg, she has no idea what to expect. However, the young Duchess quickly warms to her new companion and reveals that she is a prisoner in her own home. She is going to be the victim of a terrible plot that will eventually claim her life.

Pattern may only be a lady’s maid, but when it comes to protecting her employer, she’s determined to offer her very best service.

A dreamy setting and a nice big dose of dragons gives this unusual story lots of appeal to readers with an affection for fairy tales. Our heroine is young but professional, and while the ending might not be a complete surprise, the set-up for the series to progress is a tempting invitation indeed. A mystery with magic and friendship at its heart and a sharp dagger in its tail.
