The Churki-Burki Book of Rhyme

Publisher: Tara Books

An attractive story interspersed with rhymes, telling of two sisters, Churki and Burki, and their dog, based on the artist's own childhood memories in an Indian village.

The illustrations by well-known Gond artist Durrga Bai are naïve, each simple image heavily patterned with traditional motifs and colours. The text introduces us to everyday tasks in the village, and offers simple, repetitive rhymes which highlight aspects of the lifestyle - some rhymes support the actions, whilst others appear to be traditional songs.
