Simon Thorn only gets to see his mother once or twice a year. While his mother is supposedly travelling the world helping animals, Simon stays with his uncle in New York.

Simon also has a secret: he can talk to animals. His uncle has told him not to have anything to do with animals, but Simon does not understand why. He finds many aspects of his life confusing, until he returns from school one day to find his mum at the apartment. He begins to get some answers.

Simon learns that he and is his family are in grave danger because of their abilities. He also learns that there are many others, including his mother and his uncle. Will Simon be the one to save his family and people like him?  Who will help on this terrifying mission?

Aimee Carter unveils a world where there are close links between the animal and human worlds. This includes some individuals, called 'animalgams', who can change into animals at will. Different factions in the animalgam world have been at war for many years. As the reader meets the different factions through Simon, they begin to understand the complexities of the animalgam world.
