Why comics matter for young readers 02/12/24
Scales and Scoundrels
Volume 1: Into the Dragon’s Maw
Publisher: Image Comics
Luvander is a wanderer, following the road wherever it takes her and dreaming of treasure. Always on the lookout for a new adventure, when she meets Prince Aki and hears about Dalden Laria, The Hall of Dreaming Treasures, she doesn’t need to be asked twice to join his expedition.
But the Hall is buried deep within The Dragon’s Maw, a buried city so ancient that no one knows who built it, and so deep that no one has ever reached the bottom.
Many dangers await them on their journey, from thieving rogues and giant man-eating insects, to sea-monsters and ancient demons. But who is Luvander, really? She’s clearly keeping a dangerous secret – one that the bounty hunter on her trail will do anything for.
A fun fantasy adventure packed with both action and humour, Luvander and her companions quickly form a tight band, tying their fates together (whether they like it or not!), while Galaad’s artwork creates a world that feels full of myths about to come true. Their journey through The Dragon’s Maw is like a cross between Indiana Jones and The Lord of the Rings.
Will they reach Dalden Laria? And what will be waiting for them if they do?
